Re: Pop Robson
We've only had the top division top scorer twice in our history.

A heavy responsibility lies on Hugill's shoulders.

Re: Pop Robson
Or do you mean his West Ham debut?

gph 10:24 Sat Feb 17
Re: Pop Robson
Wouldn't be surprised if it was West Ham, as Ron Greenwood said the reason he signed him was to stop Pop from scoring against us.

Re: Pop Robson
Your starter for ten.
Which team did Pop make his debut against and what was the score.
You may confer.

I just checked out Jeff Powell's biography of Bobby Moore and Lenny Heppell gets mentioned. He helped several players with their movement including Moore, who was sceptical at first, but eventually took on board his advice.
Heppell died in 2013 at the age of 89.

Re: Pop Robson
I think it was ball-room dancing, and the father-in-law at first suggested techniques to improve Pop's table-tennis (he was good at this and golf, as well as football). As these techniques were to do with balance and movement, they transferred to football pretty well.

Re: Pop Robson
Yeah, I heard Pop took ballet lessons to improve his balance?

Re: Pop Robson
I seem to remember from one of Brooking's books that Pop Robson's father-in-law was a dance instructor and he used to come to Chadwell Heath to show the players the correct way to move on a football pitch, shielding the ball etc,and Brooking said it helped him become a better player. Does anyone else remember this? Slow,slow.Quick,Quick,Slow.

Has any other holder of the Golden Boot been uncapped?

Re: Pop Robson
If the board want to know what sort of day out constitutes "a footballing experience" at West Ham, they should be forced to watch that montage, and the Devonshire one, until their fucking eyes bleed.

Technically he's not a Geordie but a Mackem

Re: Pop Robson
Pop had the same gift as Greaves and Linekar. Nine if them were ever exceptional footballers as such but they knew exactly where to be when it mattered and they finished moves on instinct as much as anything else. I remember watching him (Pop) in his first spell with us and asking my old man if he wasnt to old to play for us. He looked about 90 through my 11 year old eyes. God i miss those days on the North bank with my Dad and my uncle.

Re: Pop Robson
My first favourite West Ham striker and he’d be worth mega millions if playing nowadays. He was winner of the golden boot in 1972-3, my first season watching us in the flesh, when we finished 6th. I was gutted on both occasions when he left us.

Re: Pop Robson
Magnificent

Him and Trev were a marvellous combination in attack

And let's not forget the wonderful Brian Moore who always had a soft spot for us despite supporting Gillingham
